ski trip day 2: getting there

Day two started early... 6:15 to be exact. We were foolishly hoping that Hayes would sleep in, but that was just crazy talk. 6:15 came and he (quite literally) sprang out of bed. Then set his sights on getting the rest of us up.

Addie is a little more like me first thing in the morning, but she came around quickly. Because, HELLO... were in a hotel for goodness sake! Is there anything more exciting for a kid to wake up to?!

After a little breakfast, we hit the road. The kids had a lot of books and art supplies to keep them happy...

And the parents had a lot of this to keep us happy (and awake) :

Ever wonder where Texas gets our wind power? Drive through Lubbock and Amarillo. It is amazing how many of these there are. As far as the eye can see...

Robert got a speeding ticket, which had him stewing rather than watching his navigation. We missed one turn in Dumas, TX which sent us on the entirely desolate alternate route through Oklahoma and eastern Colorado. It is seriously sparse out there. We passed through towns without realizing it because if you blink, you miss them. Many, many miles between gas stations. Hours upon hours of this :

But alas, we did find a restaurant for lunch. The only restaurant for many, many miles around.

The kids were happy to be out of the car for a while and it was a charming little (okay, tiny) town. It was nice to stretch our legs and get some much needed iced tea. Caffeine was running low. As it turns out, there is NOT a Starbucks at every corner in some parts of the country. No really, it's true.

Back in the car for naps, which took us well into Colorado. Hayes is a worker man, did you know? Yes, even in his sleep.

The kids did so well! What could quite easily be disastrous with two little ones turned out to be a wonderful road trip. We were able to hold off on any watching any videos until after naps on day 2 (amazing!), so when the kids woke up it was a nice surprise to them that we could actually watch the movies in the car! Tricky mommy had told them the movies where for when we got to Gee-gee and Papa's house. But wait, what's this?? Oh my, we DID bring the laptop. Maybe we could watch movies on this? Let's give it a try. Oh look, it's working! Entertainment for the last few hours. Beautiful. Pulled into Winter Park just before dinnertime.
